About Westchester Medical Center

The Department of Neurosurgery at Westchester Medical Center is one of the few institutions in the New York City region offering GammaTile brachytherapy. Dr. Simon Hanft, a neurosurgeon specializing in brain tumor surgery, performs nearly one of these operations per month, in which the GammaTile seeds are placed into the resection cavity after a brain tumor is removed. These seeds emit radiation immediately and directly into the surrounding brain matter to kill the remaining microscopic tumor cells and further reduce the chances of regrowth. These operations are done in tandem with Dr. Rohil Shekher, a radiation oncologist specializing in the treatment of brain tumors. Together Drs. Hanft and Shekher run one of the busiest GammaTile brachytherapy programs in the country, serving patients in the great Hudson Valley region and beyond.
